Overcoming Objections

No matter how inclusive you feel your community is, you will encounter objections.  Keeping your cool and not allowing yourself to become angry at any of the questions or objections presented will strengthen your position.  The following are some of the objections I have encountered and some suggested responses.

 

Question:  Isn’t this just a way to get same-sex marriage legalized?

 

Response:  This isn’t about marriage this is about humanity.  The reality is, marriage confers over eleven hundred benefits, we are only asking for about six with a Domestic Partner Registry.

 

Question:  Can’t you get the same rights if you have a Power of Attorney and/or a Health Care Directive?

 

Response:  A POA and a HCD do not survive once a person is dead.  Therefore, without a DPR the surviving partner would not be able to make funeral arrangements.

 

Question:  Won’t people look at this and say you don’t need same-sex marriage since you have rights under the DPR?

 

Response:  Some will try to say that but again, it is important to remember this is only giving approximately six benefits.
